
2011 was certainly the year in which mashup artists from across the world gave meaning to the phrase: “bedroom producer”. Never before have there been so many people to pick up some software, download some acapellas, and produce such professional mashups. In the past year, the typical mashup went from just a couple of songs slapped together, to now including nearly 10 different songs all in the same track. The production of these tracks is taken so seriously, and it’s because these are entirely new songs, all from sampled content. That’s what EDM is all about though, right? Using what’s already out there, sampling it and forming something new with it. To me, mashups are like the new version of mainstream radio music. They have all the best segments of every song used, and mostly encompass the top 40 hits. They appeal to the general electronic music listener who wants to party to songs he or she is familiar with.
