Meet Opiuo, a New Zealand born bass-funk producer who now calls Australia home. His style is indescribable and he has no genre. In order to best describe the sound of his music, I think the artist does it best by describing some of his most recent productions with descriptions like “sizzling swunk O bass monk” and “swunk blushing bass funk“. Opiuo shows what is possible with electronic music these day by constantly pushing his own limits and redefining bass music in general. Over the course of the past 9 months Opiuo has released a trilogy of EP’s all titled Butternut Slap. All three EP’s have their own vibe and each is produced beautifully.
My favorite track off of Part 1 has to be the track titled Bill Bro Baggins. It starts up fast with a massive buildup then drops into what Opiuo does best, creating that ‘swunk blushing bass funk’. There are so many layers to each song and each song is so complex that it becomes impossible not to start to bob your head along with each beat. Part 2 is no exception to Part 1. You can really see how the artist progresses through each EP making each one unique and not making every track sound the same which has become common with many artists in the electronic industry these days. Wiggle Sticks off of Part 2 is without a doubt my favorite track off of all 3 EP’s. It brings a bit of a tribal feel with some drums and adds numerous other instruments throughout that make it extremely attractive to listen to. Not to mention the heavy basslines make it an instant banger. Fizzle Ticker off of Part 3 is another amazing track. The use of so many elements in each song is what makes Opiuo’s music so unique. Instead of sticking with what is safe he likes to take risks and push his own talent to the edge. Be sure to check out all 3 EP’s and download these tracks through iTunes or Beatport to support the artist.
